Key technologies for digital transformationPrivate LTE-/5G-Campus Networks

New digital applications in business and within CI call for reliable, fast, secure data communication. Until now, this has been the domain of glass fibre and wired transmission technologies. The main wireless technology used was professional Wi-Fi technology.

With its expanded performance characteristics, the new 5G standard opens up completely new deployment opportunities for mobile communications in business (industrial internet of things - IIoT).

As a whole, the new features of 5G are bringing about a small revolution in industry. Reliable and flexible distribution, and retrieval of massive amounts of data, almost in real time, are opening up options for new sequences and processes.

3,7 GHz - 3,8 GHz for private mobile telecommunication networksFrequencies for private users

By providing the frequency range of 3.7 to 3.8 GHz for private mobile telecommunication networks, the German Government has paved the way for a wide range of campus networks in the areas of Industry 4.0, the chemical industry, major medium-sized enterprises, research facilities, agriculture and so on.

LTE (4G) and, above all, the 5G standard offer extremely-high bandwidths, short signal run times, increased availability and the possibility of integrating a large number of terminal devices. This means that broadband private mobile telecommunication networks can now also make their mark in the industrial landscape.

Local private mobile telecommunication networksA wide range of application scenarios and benefits

Excellent scalability

A third-party provider service can be more expensive in relation to the business benefits. There, the pricing is generally based on the number of connected devices, data transactions or transmitted data volume. The use of one’s own networks helps avoid these disadvantages and further expand the network over time, as needs change.

Affordable frequencies

The Federal Network Agency (German: BNetzA) has set moderate frequency usage charges for LTE/5G campus networks, making Germany a pioneer in this respect. KRITIS operators, industrial firms, medium-sized companies, etc. can build up their own campus networks independently of the restrictions found in public networks.

Wide-range availability

Industrial networks need to meet much higher requirements in terms of availability and reliability than is normal for public networks. Only an independent, private network with its own telecommunication infrastructure can be protected in such a way that strong availability and reliability are guaranteed.

A high level of data security

Another important aspect is that the data transmitted in the private mobile telecommunication network does not leave the campus, and are processed locally. A local network, well protected by separate measures, also offers less opportunity for external breaches.

Protecting investments

Mobile telecommunication standards have been driven forward with a high level of innovation since their beginnings in the 1980s. The current 4G standard (LTE) already meets many industrial requirements. 5G provides even more functions. Because of the release of wireless frequencies for private purposes, these technologies can now also be used for campus networks. Here, the infrastructures of the various generations are mutually compatible, which helps to protect investments.

New application scenarios

Mobile broadband data connections have made all sorts of new applications possible that were previously just Utopian dreams.

A few examples by way of illustration:

  • IIoT sensors provide data for autonomous logistics robots transporting goods or parts from A to B.
  • Augmented reality (AR) improves efficiency in production.
  • Machines provide data about their status, allowing imminent faults or breakdowns to be detected at an early stage and maintenance intervals to be individually defined in good time (predictive maintenance).

Still pending:

  • Support for a very high density of devices within one geographical area
  • Low latency periods allow mobile communication to move into production
  • Different quality of service levels for different applications in the same network
  • Security with two-factor authentication, integrity protection and transmission encryption up to AES-256 (advanced encryption standard)
  • Advanced technology for private networks; 3GPP (3rd generation partnership project) standards and expandability

For companies, 5G wireless technology offers a vast potential for innovation and value creation. Network production processes in decentralised structures mean that productivity and resource efficiency can be increased and emissions reduced. Private 5G networks allow companies to fully monitor their wireless infrastructure, thus creating a future-ready, flexible, and expandable communication solution.
